We made a beach trip back to Destin Florida in August 2008. We hadn't been there since my kids were babies and it was fantasticness in a bottle. In the last 10 years, we've been to Alabama twice and the house there is wonderful but nothing compares to Destin's lovely beaches and water....I love the beach so much. I just need a beach body to go along with it...not sure that's gonna happen anytime soon.
But when we go to the beach, John has planning sessions for weeks. He's like a one man army planning for an invasion. He buys hooks and fishing line and rods and reels and prepares and plans and makes sure the rods are in the car before he takes a head count on kids or the wife. He was never as detail oriented when I was pregnant with any of his offspring and it was time to head to the hospital. But, I let that go a long time ago. Anyway, as the trip nears, he can barely sleep until the day finally arrives and we're driving to the fish. He's a man with purpose on that day. And as we enter town, we must stop and buy a fishing licence on the way to our beach house. And then about 12 seconds after the car is unloaded, he's headed to the water's edge as fast as his little feet can take him.
Well 2008 was a great year for John because he caught not one but 2 black tipped sharks. It caused quite a stir on the beach and lots of people gathered to have a look. As you can see, he was very happy. But you know, it bothers me greatly that there are actual sharks in the actual water that I'm actually in. I'd actually prefer for them to take their own vacay when I'm at the beach...maybe a nice little jaunt to the Hamptons.
One time while in Alabama, Jared and Austin saw a BIG shark cruising through the waves when they were standing nearby. That's too close! And even though the sharks John caught were on the small side, they were still sharks. Sharks and me can never be friends. I can't have friends with really really big teeth that could use me for noshing on like a snack. It just wouldn't be a good idea.
So in 2008, in Destin, late one afternoon, John was reeling in something big and when he finally landed it and saw it was a shark, his trip was made. It was the 2nd shark he'd ever caught but the biggest for sure. Melanie documented the entire event which was good because I was in the room and missed the whole thing!
No sharks were injured in the making of these pictures. He and John fought and tussled and then when all photo-ops were completed, he was released to go and swim another day.
Definitely a thumbs up for sure.
All the boys definitely had a blast!
