Today and the news of it

The birthday weekend went off without a hitch. All people big and small descended on Lafayette Saturday morning and afternoon to celebrate Lucas' first birthday. We had such a fun time. Lucas was somewhat shy about the eating of his smash cake but he seemed pleased with the event. We hung out, ate pizza, watched basketball and then went to sleep. On Sunday morning we met for breakfast and then everyone headed home. We arrived home about 3:30 to the steady beat of rain that continued until Monday and may return later in the week. I'm over the rain, just like I'm over the snow. Our yard's so swamped with water we need boots to walk across it.

Our house has officially declared fire weather over with the cleaning out of our fireplace last night. If it's 50 degrees outside with a fire going, I melting into a puddle. It was time for that to be over.

Monday night at 7:45ish my new washing machine arrived and I'm happy to say I think I like it. I'm also happy to say I THINK there will be no more washing machines coming in the future. I think that bug has been successfully squashed. I washed all the clothes and got caught up, THEN Owen brought in his dirty clothes. Don't even get me started on that.

The other huge news is people are vomiting. It's probably happening all over the country, but the few here in my home city are the ones that affect my life. It seems the birthday boy Lucas caught a bug and he passed it to his Mom and his granny. Then his great grandmother got it. Then his great aunt got it, then his cousin/auntie got it. The rest of us are very concerned. I currently have no symptoms and am planning on not getting the disease. In Jesus name it won't visit me, even though one in my household has it. So. Many. Ughs. For all the sick ones as well as the "science experiments" waiting to see what happens...God bless us all for reals.

And I can't believe I forgot to tell this story from last week about my own boy, though he not be wee any longer. One week ago Monday night Carrie came to town and when she came over, Owen wasn't' home due to studying with school peeps. Well Carrie and I talked til almost midnight and then she left and I went to get in the shower. When I got out John was ready to go to bed but the carport door was unlocked and Owen was still out studying. Blah blah blah. John went to bed. At 1:15 I texted him asking when he'd be home. No response. More texting as well as calling ensued but all in vain. In the following 20 minutes I texted and called him so many times I can't count and by then my concern had ratcheted up to epic levels. I made the instant decision to drive to the campus, in my jammies, to see if the library was still open. By then it was 1:40. I drove to the campus, it was as silent as the grave. (Sense and Sensibility reference intended). I was pretty much gripped with fear. When I got home I went straight to our bedroom intending to wake John up so he could be fear gripped as well. And then. I glanced over at Owen's bedroom door and saw it was closed. And it sort of hit me. I opened the door and there, by the light of my cell phone, I found my son sound asleep in his bed. Been there the whole time. The whole time I sat in the den texting him, he was asleep in his bed. My phone light went off. I turned it back on to look again, and stood there in dumbfounded relieved silence. Of course I blamed John for not locking the door while I was in the shower. He knew Owen was home. And Owen knew Owen was home. No one told me. My house is not that big. I'm just gonna stop here. BUT! When Owen and I talked about it the next day I told him I was NOT ready for it to be funny yet! Or maybe ever. That lasted about two hours. WHATEVER.

And now I think I'm up to date with all my uninteresting news. At least for now. I hope to post one, two or three more posts today. I know. Calm down. But it hasn't happened yet and work is calling shortly.

Hope all who are feeling terrible feel better.

And prayers for everyone else for it not to happen.

See ya at the see saw....

The week of appliance limbo and two birthdays

Well people when it rains here it now snows. We've just finished another snow day and it's back to work on Friday again. Last week our first day of work was Friday. This week we had one day off and back to work on Friday. It's taking a toll about what day of the week it is. I took no snow pictures this time. I'm over it. Go away cold weather, it's time to start complaining about how hot it is.

As I said the other day I'd report back about my washer. Well the demise of my appliances continues with the death of my washing machine. Lets assess. In the last 14 months we've had to replace our dish washer, our microwave and now the washing machine. My refrigerator is currently on life support. It's just a matter of time before it will need shock paddles or a burial at sea. In case you aren't in a cycle of needing to replace appliances, be prepared to spend lots of money.

Never one to back down from a handy man's challenge, on Monday John attempted to fix the washer thinking it was a broken belt, well that didn't work. So by Tuesday I began the arduous process of looking for a new washer. I hate it so much. There are no less than 9000 different brands and machines currently on the market. It's daunting people. But after three trips and seven stores later, I chose a washing machine. Then I came home to find it online and order it through a website that would allow me points on a purchase. These points would go towards future purchases. SO. I ordered it. Thought I'd ordered through the correct website, didn't, tried to cancel the order, then decided I'd done it correctly, reinstated the order, only to find out it would be March 18th before delivery of my washer. No. Canceled the online order, got a confirming email about the cancellation, then John and I went to the same store in town that I ordered from the website. Bought the washer I wanted. It will be delivered on Monday. Donzos. Ordered. Not so fast. Today, (which is Friday) John got a call from a store rep telling him the washer will be delivered on March 18. No again. Me thinks the cancelled washer is not really cancelled and now we may have 45 washing machines.....or two.....showing up beginning anywhere from Monday to mid month. It's been and continues to be an adventure. I'll report back when I find out what's gonna happen.

Last night John left to go work in Arkansas today and then come home. When he got to the plant this morning he found they'd had an outage and he wouldn't be able to work after all. Turns out he went to Arkansas to spend the night and come home. It's just not been our week.

I started this post on Friday and now it's Saturday and later today we're going to Lafayette for Lucas' first birthday party. James' party was last weekend.

Happy birthday to the two birthday boys.

It's so great to have these two added to the family.

I'll be posting other birthday things later this week. I hope.

Gots to go to bed so I can get up and go!

Our wonderful snow day

Been working on this for days and now it's finished. Hallelujah!

Last Wednesday morning began with the usual broken heart for any people who reside in Northeast Louisiana hoping the snowy weather forecast was correct. In anticipation of the "white out" we were expecting, businesses and schools had closed all over town. And when we went to bed Tuesday night, we were sleeping with the dream of snow covered yards when we awoke. So first thing the next morning, I peaked out my window with the same hope and anticipation school children have. Crestfallen comes to my mind when I think back on the moment. It was raining. And I was sad. This same scenario has happened so many times before. And the day seemed ruined.

The forecast had called for the snow to begin around 4:00am. At 10, the rain was still coming down hard and all hope was lost. I was in the den at my computer and considering writing a VERY sternly worded letter to weathermen and women everywhere. But then I got distracted by the Internet. As I was perusing Fox news and People.com, I kept an occasional eye on the backdoor, but the yard was filling up with water...not a flake in sight. But then by 11:00 everything happened. In an instant everything changed, and I saw it all. The rain almost instantly changed to sleet. It was crazy how one second it was rain and the next it was ice and shortly after that it changed again to huge flakey snow. Wonderful huge flakey snow! Suddenly the day was made. I awoke sleeping people in the house and there began our fun filled snow day. It was quite glorious.

Lets have a look...

William's first ever snow sighting.
 Was very exciting.
Needed a little warmth by the fire.
Then back outside for documentation with James in tow.
Super cute pic.
It was hard to choose between these pictures.
So I didn't.
Look at that blizzard.
Look at all that snow we got! I'm still shocked after all the rain that fell.
Meanwhile at our house....Addy had to be coaxed inside occasionally. She was happy as a clam. That's a big flake in front of her eye.
Didn't take many pictures and was a little disappointed with the ones I did.
I made my people take a quick snow pic.
We were about to go riding to see the sights.
Gotta have a house in the snow picture.
A quick artistic shot. Eh, it's OK.
Same here.

While we were riding about, the Swanders were home building a snowman. How freaking cute is that kid on the right?
Totally successful build of a snowman, with pickle eyes and an orange slice mouth.
Then we went to the levee and Caitlin and Olivia opted to go for a walk instead of sledding.
That's them in the blizzard.
One more.
That's Owen redneck sledding with his friends.
Emma joined in with them. Some examples of redneck sledding: Inner-tube float typically used in the ocean, plastic sheeting, rubbermaid storage buckets, and one....no kidding....insert from a hot tub. Saw it with my own eyes.
We left the levee and eventually went back to the levee so William could get his first sledding experience. Actually many people's first sledding experience. Lets see how they did.

That's Caitlin, WIlliam, Lindsey, Olivia and Emma.
Getting ready to give it a try.
The sequence didn't come out very good, but they did get to the bottom of the hill.
Walking up the levee over and over got a little exhausting for the boy.
So he got a little help...
Trudging up...
And up...
And up...
Then he finally hitched a ride.
Then a group sledding experience. I have this in Christmas ornament form, minus the plastic sheeting of course.
One last ride...
With Beba.
James drove himself to the venue.
While others were sledding...
He was large and in charge.
And before we knew it, it was getting dark and people were cold and wet and tired. So we headed home to thaw out and reflect. OK, we did thaw out, but we really didn't reflect. But what started out as a very disappointing day ended up being an awesome one! There's some reflection right there. Snow is fun for a very short period of time and then I'm ready to say, "Bye Felicia!" Add winter to that gubye as well. I'm so over being cold and staying inside at work watching mind numbingly terrible children's movies. Bring on spring and warm weather so I can begin complaining about being too hot!

One last thing and then I'm out. Friday I was talking to Emma and I had to run by the eye doc and was gonna go by Mom's on my way to work. Well I was working feverishly on this post until the last minute and jumped up from the couch, changed shirts quickly, went to the eye doc, went to Mom's, sat down and crossed my legs and that's when I discovered I still had on my house shoes. Went to the eye doc in my house shoes. They're Ugg house shoes so it's not like they were pink fuzzy slippers...which I would never own I might add. Oh well, to live an hour in my head would not be for the faint of heart.

That's all I have for now. Still have lots to blog about but distractions are like shiny objects that catch my eye....they're numerous and everywhere.

I've got chores to complete before I leave for work. And oh yeah our washer decided to stop agitating last night. Which REALLY agitated me. John's going to attempt to fix it tonight.

Here's hoping.

I'll report back sometime.
